It was February of 2009. I recognize it as if it were just a year ago. I was working from home, so I threw a onus of clothes in the washer, down the hall from my office. When the beeper alerted me to the end of the bathing cycle, I tossed the load into the dryer and went back to work.

I had noticed it was intriguing an extra half-cycle or so to fully dry the clothes, but I scarcely figured it was because I'm a stupid guy who jams too many items into the dryer. No big deal.

I contemplated heading to the gym while the clothes dried, but as I designed the amount of work to be done, I realized the workout wasn't a good point. Better to stay chained to the desk.

About an hour later, I heard a beeping shivaree, but I was knee-deep in my work and I just figured it was the normal alert from the dryer. But then I realized it was a different kind of beeping seem.

Ah. The smoke alarm. Probably needed to change the battery. Except as contrasted with of a sporadic alert, it seemed to be, um, SCREAMING at me.
